Ölfusforir, ásamt Varmá, eru á náttúruminjaskrá Suðurlands. „Ölfusforir eru víðáttumiklar, blautar engjar með miklu og fjölskrúðugu fuglalífi“ (1). Besta aðkoma að svæðinu er frá Arnarbæli að austan og frá flestum bæjum í vesturhluta Ölfussins. Ganga verður um svæðið en votlendið ásamt Varmá og Þorleifslæk, sem renna eftir því miðju, torvelda yfirferð um það. Ölfusforir eru taldar mikilvægar fyrir stærri lífheild og tengjast ósasvæði Ölfusár þar sem saman koma þurrlendi, ferskvatn og sjór. Ósasvæði Ölfusár er á lista BirdLife International yfir alþjóðlega mikilvæg fuglasvæði á Íslandi (3).
