歴史と背景
Mjóifjörður's isolation has shaped its settlement and transport history. At Asknes, Norwegian operators built a major whaling station around 1900, then one of the largest of its kind. The fjord's modern road remains highly seasonal, and winter access depends on scheduled boat connections from Norðfjörður.
Mjóifjörður is an 18-kilometre-long inlet and one of East Iceland's most remote inhabited fjords. Around fourteen people live year-round in the tiny village of Brekkuþorp. The mountain road into the fjord is normally open for only about four months of the year, depending on weather; outside the road season, scheduled boat service from Norðfjörður provides access. In summer, the drive becomes a destination in itself, passing the multi-tiered Klifbrekkufossar, the remains of the Norwegian whaling station at Asknes and continuing along the narrow coast toward the Dalatangi lighthouses. Visitors should treat Mjóifjörður as a remote seasonal journey and check current road and weather conditions before driving.
民話
物語と民話
The defining experience of Mjóifjörður is remoteness. In summer a narrow mountain road reveals waterfalls, a tiny settlement, whaling-station ruins and the long coastal approach toward Dalatangi; for much of the rest of the year the road is closed.
