Maríuhellar belongs to Iceland's extensive network of lava tubes, geological formations born from powerful volcanic eruptions. These caves form when a stream of lava develops a continuous hard crust, insulating the molten rock flowing beneath. When the eruption ceases, or the lava flow diverts, the molten interior drains away, leaving behind an empty, tube-like cavern. The creation of Maríuhellar began thousands of years ago, a testament to the seismic activity that continues to shape Iceland. Over millennia, the interior has been sculpted by natural processes, including water seepage and temperature fluctuations, leading to the formation of unique mineral deposits and, as seen in the images, stunning seasonal ice formations like icicles and snow accumulation near its entrances. These caves are not merely hollow spaces but intricate records of ancient lava flows, providing scientists and visitors alike with invaluable insights into volcanic geology.
