歴史と背景
The first lighthouse at Malarrif was erected in 1917. This initial structure was a 20-meter-high iron grid lighthouse, constructed in Reykjavík and then transported in pieces to the site for assembly. However, like many other iron grid lighthouses built in Iceland, the older Malarrifsviti quickly succumbed to the relentless forces of weathering and rust in the harsh coastal environment. Recognizing the need for a more robust and enduring beacon, the current lighthouse was built in its place in 1946. Designed by the esteemed architect Ágúst Pálsson, the younger Malarrifsviti stands at an impressive 24.5 meters in height. It is a distinctive concrete cylindrical tower, characterized by four strong buttressing walls that give it its unique and sturdy appearance. The lantern house, an original Icelandic construction, was salvaged from the older lighthouse and integrated into the new design. Today, Malarrifsviti is proudly counted among Iceland's protected lighthouses, a testament to its historical significance and architectural design.
Malarrifsviti is more than just a lighthouse; it's a gateway to an unforgettable coastal experience in West Iceland. Situated on the stunning Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this iconic white concrete tower stands proudly atop dramatic black lava cliffs, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The current lighthouse, built in 1946 and designed by architect Ágúst Pálsson, is a striking example of Icelandic engineering, replacing an earlier iron grid structure from 1917 that couldn't withstand the harsh elements. Its unique cylindrical shape with four supporting walls makes it instantly recognizable and a photographer's delight, especially against the backdrop of the churning sea and dramatic cloudscapes visible in the image. The area around Malarrifsviti is designated as a hiking trail, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to explore Iceland's raw, untamed beauty on foot. A well-maintained path leads visitors along the rugged coastline, allowing for close-up views of the impressive basalt formations and the powerful waves crashing against the shore. Keep an eye out for diverse birdlife nesting in the cliffs. The trail offers various viewpoints, perfect for capturing the lighthouse, the ocean, and the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier (on clear days). Proper footwear is essential due to the uneven terrain, and weather-appropriate clothing is highly recommended, as coastal conditions can change rapidly. This protected landmark provides a profound sense of isolation and grandeur, making it an excellent stop for those seeking to connect with Iceland's remarkable natural landscapes and maritime history.
