Laxárgljúfur, a prominent canyon in the highlands of South Iceland, owes its existence to the powerful Stóra-Laxá river. This river, with its origins in the Laxárdrög area south of Kerlingarfjöll mountains, has meticulously carved deep into the bedrock over approximately the last 10,000 years. The canyon's formation is primarily attributed to the erosive and excavating action of the river following the last ice age. The canyon stretches for about 10 kilometers, from its innermost reaches down to Hrunakrók at the top of Laxárdalur valley, and reaches depths of 100-200 meters. Its walls are often sheer and vertical on both sides, with the clear river flowing through narrow passages. In other sections, the canyon widens and features stepped formations. These diverse geological structures, particularly vibrant in areas like Fögrutorfa, reveal the complex volcanic and glacial history of Iceland.

Laxárgljúfur follows Stóra-Laxá through a rugged canyon landscape. Access varies across the canyon and some sections are difficult or unsuitable for casual hiking, so visitors should use established routes and current local guidance.
