Látur, whose name translates to "lazy" in Icelandic, holds a unique place in the maritime history of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. Located strategically north of Heimaey, it served as an indispensable landmark and a welcome respite for sailors for centuries. During an era when the primary mode of transport between the Icelandic mainland, particularly Landeyjar, and the Vestmannaeyjar islands was by rowing boats—often large eight-oared vessels—the journey was arduous and demanding. Here, they could pause their strenuous efforts, stretch their legs on the sturdy rock, and gather their strength before embarking on the final stretch of their voyage to Heimaey. Its designation as "lazy" reflects its function as a place where one could momentarily be "lazy" and rest.
Látur stands north of Heimaey and is best understood from Vestmannaeyjar's maritime history.
