Kjarvalsstaðir opened in 1973 as one of Reykjavík’s primary spaces for visual art. It was named in honor of Jóhannes S. Kjarval, who played a major role in shaping Iceland’s artistic identity. Over the years, the museum has expanded its role to include both historical and contemporary exhibitions, making it an important platform for Icelandic and international artists. Today, it remains a central part of the Reykjavík Art Museum system.
