Kjarvalshvammur's history is inextricably linked to Jóhannes S. Kjarval, one of Iceland's most revered artists. Around 1948, Kjarval, known for his deep connection to the Icelandic landscape and its folklore, sought a secluded place in East Iceland where he could immerse himself in nature and paint. He initially set up a tent on this very spot, finding the rugged beauty of the area profoundly inspiring. Recognizing the artist's dedication and need for a more permanent base, a local farmer generously provided Kjarval with the plot of land and built the humble white cabin that stands there today. This gesture allowed Kjarval to establish a long-term retreat where he could frequently return. It became the only property Kjarval ever owned, a testament to its special significance in his life. It was within this tranquil setting, surrounded by the misty cliffs and verdant slopes depicted in the image, that Kjarval spent considerable time, producing many of his most famous works. The site also notably includes a boathouse for "Mávinn," a boat Kjarval once sailed down the Selfljótið river to Borgarfjörður, adding another layer to the story of his adventurous spirit and connection to the land and waterways.
