Prior to the current structure, a church stood slightly to the west, serving the Hvanneyri parish. However, in 1903, a devastating storm swept through the region, famously blowing the church away. The remnants of the old church reportedly landed on the precise spot where its successor would eventually be built, a testament to the sheer power of the Icelandic weather. Following this dramatic event, the local congregation found itself unable or unwilling to undertake the arduous task of rebuilding. It was at this critical juncture that the Vesturamt (Western District) stepped in, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to preserving religious infrastructure in the area. They took charge of the construction, commissioning Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, a prominent Icelandic architect known for his distinctive designs, to draw up the plans. The new church, consecrated in 1905, was then entrusted to the Bændaskólinn (Agricultural College) at Hvanneyri for its ownership and upkeep.
