Neðstikaupstaður developed as part of Ísafjörður's historic trading and maritime centre. The preserved timber buildings reflect the period when coastal trade and fishing were central to the town's economy. Their survival makes the area an important part of Ísafjörður's architectural heritage and a natural companion to the Westfjords Heritage Museum.

Húsin í Neðstakaupstað form one of the most important historic waterfront areas in Ísafjörður. The dark timber buildings preserve the atmosphere of the town's earlier trading and fishing economy and sit close to the harbour beneath the steep mountains that frame the settlement. Rather than guessing at the former function of individual buildings, visitors should experience the group as a preserved historic environment. The architecture shows the materials and construction used in an Icelandic trading town, while the nearby Westfjords Heritage Museum provides additional interpretation of maritime life and commerce. The area is compact and easy to explore on foot as part of central Ísafjörður. Allow time to look at the buildings from different angles, but respect any structures that are closed or still in active use. Combined with the museum and harbour, Neðstikaupstaður gives visitors one of the clearest introductions to the built heritage of the Westfjords.
