Story & Folklore
Hrafnseyri in the Westfjords is the birthplace of Jón Sigurðsson (1811–1879) — Iceland's greatest national hero and the man who led the peaceful independence movement that eventually freed Iceland from Danish rule in 1944. A small museum and the faithfully restored turf farmhouse where he was born are open in summer. Jón's calm insistence on legal, non-violent means of achieving independence inspired generations of Icelanders, and June 17 — his birthday — is now Iceland's National Day, celebrated with flags, speeches and parades in every town. The farmhouse is remote, in a classic Westfjords setting: a narrow fjord, steep hillsides, the sound of the sea.
