Herdísarvík has a rich and layered history, beginning as a substantial farm, or 'stórbýli', in Selvogi. It evolved into a well-known fishing station, or 'verstöð', where numerous fishing huts once dotted the landscape. Today, the area is abandoned, but the ruins of these huts and the many stone walls, 'grjótgarðar', used for drying fish in the lava fields, serve as tangible reminders of its industrious past. These significant archaeological remains were officially declared protected in 1973, preserving them for future generations. Beyond its economic history, Herdísarvík holds cultural significance as the cherished home of the acclaimed Icelandic poet Einar Benediktsson (1864-1940) during the last years of his life. His deep connection to the land is evidenced by his generous donation of the property to the University of Iceland in 1935. This act further cemented Herdísarvík's place in Iceland's cultural heritage. The profound natural beauty of Herdísarvík has also been recognized and protected. In 1988, the entire area was designated a protected natural site, ensuring that its dramatic coastal scenery, unique geological features, and serene bay continue to be preserved. This dual protection of both its historical relics and its natural environment makes Herdísarvík a truly special location in Iceland.

Herdísarvík combines a historic farm site with an exposed lava coastline. The area preserves traces of older fishing activity and stone-built structures connected with life on this difficult shore. Poet and businessman Einar Benediktsson lived at Herdísarvík during the later part of his life. The site is protected for its natural and cultural value, and visitors should use established access and respect sensitive remains and coastal hazards.
