Hellisheiði is one of the largest geothermal power plants in the world, generating electricity and hot water from underground steam and heat. The visitor centre offers interactive exhibitions about geothermal energy, Iceland's volcanic geology, and renewable power.

The power plant is located on Route 1, about 25 km from Reykjavík. Hellisheiði opened in 2006 and supplies about 30% of Iceland's electricity and hot water to the Reykjavík area. The plant drills deep into the earth to access superheated water and steam. It's also a pioneer in carbon capture technology, injecting CO2 back into the ground where it mineralizes into rock.
