Story & Folklore
Hellisheiði opened in 2006 and supplies about 30% of Iceland's electricity and hot water to the Reykjavík area. The plant drills deep into the earth to access superheated water and steam. It's also a pioneer in carbon capture technology, injecting CO2 back into the ground where it mineralizes into rock.
