Hella developed as a service settlement in the 20th century at an important crossing and transport point on the Ytri-Rangá. Its modern role is closely tied to agriculture, regional services and travel along Route 1.
Hella sits on the Ring Road beside the Ytri-Rangá river and provides accommodation, food, fuel and other services for travellers crossing South Iceland. The town is a useful base for the surrounding Rangárþing countryside and for routes leading toward Hekla and the highlands.
