Gullsteinn holds a unique place in Icelandic history, particularly concerning the early Christianization of the island around the year 1000. It is famously linked to Koðrán, a farmer from Stóra-Giljá in Vatnsdalur, who was the father of Þorvaldur víðförli, one of the first Christian missionaries in Iceland. Koðrán reportedly had a strong pagan belief in the stone, considering it sacred and home to a protective spirit. The legend recounts that Koðrán was reluctant to be baptized by his own son, fearing that such an act would anger the guardian spirit within Gullsteinn. Bishop Friðrik, who accompanied Þorvaldur, then took matters into his own hands. He went to the stone and sang over it until, according to the saga, the stone "burst." This dramatic event is often interpreted as a symbolic moment where the old pagan beliefs gave way to the new Christian faith. A memorial was erected near Gullsteinn in 1981, marking the 1000-year anniversary of the arrival of Þorvaldur víðförli and Bishop Friðrik, highlighting the enduring significance of this site in Iceland's religious and cultural narrative.
