Gullfossについて

Gullfoss — 'Golden Falls' — is one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, where the Hvítá river plunges in two stages into a dramatic canyon. It is one of the three main stops on the famous Golden Circle route.

Experience the awe-inspiring, untamed power of Iceland's iconic Golden Falls, a true testament to nature's force.

背景

歴史と背景

In the early 20th century, a foreign investor wanted to harness Gullfoss for hydroelectric power. The landowner's daughter, Sigríður Tómasdóttir, fought to stop the project — reportedly threatening to throw herself into the waterfall if it were destroyed. She is considered Iceland's first environmentalist. The project was eventually cancelled and the falls were later donated to the Icelandic state and protected.

Gullfoss is a major waterfall on the Hvítá river, which carries glacial water from the Langjökull area. The river descends in two main stages, about 11 metres and 21 metres, before entering a narrow canyon. Marked upper and lower viewpoints provide different perspectives, although paths can become wet, icy or temporarily restricted. Gullfoss also has an important conservation history connected with early 20th-century proposals to harness the river for power and the efforts associated with Sigríður Tómasdóttir to protect the falls.

民話

物語と民話

High above the Golden Circle, a faint roar beckoned, growing louder with each step along the winding path visible on the green hillside. The air grew cooler, infused with the scent of damp earth and an exhilarating freshness. Then, through a dramatic cleft in the earth, Gullfoss exploded into view. From this breathtaking upper vantage point, the Hvítá River, a ribbon of grey-blue, seemed to hesitate before plummeting in two magnificent tiers into the deep, ancient canyon. Mist erupted upwards, a ghostly veil kissed by the sun's fleeting rays, hinting at the rainbows often born here. The surrounding landscape, painted in strokes of green and distant russet, stretched endlessly towards distant, subtle peaks under a dramatic, cloud-strewn sky. It wasn't just a waterfall; it was a living, breathing force, a symphony of water and stone, a visceral reminder of Iceland's raw, untamed beauty. Standing there, the sheer power vibrating through the ground, one couldn't help but feel a profound connection to the heart of this wild island.
