Grímsvötn's history is written in millennia of geological activity. As Iceland's most active volcanic system, it has shaped much of the surrounding landscape beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap for eons. Its basaltic eruptions have built up a massive central volcano, continuously interacting with the overlying ice. This constant interplay between fire and ice defines Grímsvötn. Its subglacial eruptions cause significant meltwater accumulation, leading to periodic jökulhlaups, which are powerful glacial outburst floods that have dramatically altered river systems and landforms in the region. Grímsvötn is an active subglacial volcanic system beneath Vatnajökull. Eruptions beneath the ice can melt large volumes of water and produce jökulhlaups, so the system is closely monitored.
