Gljúfrasteinn preserves the home and workplace of Halldór Laxness, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The house, study, art collection and furnishings have been kept as a writer’s museum, with visitor material about his life and work. The surrounding garden and Mosfellsdalur landscape are also closely associated with the author.

The Icelandic state acquired Gljúfrasteinn in 2002 and it opened to the public as a writer’s museum two years later.
