Fáskrúðsfjörður became a trading post in 1880 and later developed into the principal East Iceland base for French fishermen until 1935. The French presence left a lasting mark through buildings, graves, language and cultural ties, including the village's relationship with Gravelines in northern France.
Fáskrúðsfjörður has one of East Iceland's most distinctive cultural identities. The settlement became an authorised trading post in 1880 and, from the latter part of the nineteenth century until 1935, served as the main hub for French fishermen working off Iceland's east coast. That history remains visible in bilingual Icelandic-French street signs, the cemetery of French and Belgian sailors outside town and the former French hospital, built in 1903 and now restored for new uses. The village and its fjord therefore combine Eastfjords scenery with a documented cross-cultural maritime history.
