Folklore
Story & Folklore
Eldhraun is the largest lava field in Iceland and one of the largest in the world — covering 565 km² after the catastrophic Laki eruption of 1783–84. Laki was one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history: over eight months, 130 craters poured out 14 km³ of lava and released enormous quantities of sulphur dioxide. The resulting 'Laki haze' reached Europe, killing crops and livestock across the continent. In Iceland, the eruption killed 9,000 people — a quarter of the population — mainly through volcanic fluorine poisoning. Today Eldhraun is covered in a thick blanket of rock moss that makes the entire field look like a moonscape covered in green velvet. Driving through it on the Ring Road is one of Iceland's most surreal experiences.
