Eldhraun near Kirkjubæjarklaustur formed during the Skaftáreldar eruption of 1783–1784, when lava from the Lakagígar fissure system spread across a vast area of South Iceland. Over time, moss colonised much of the rough lava surface. The moss is fragile and can take decades to recover from trampling.
Eldhraun is a historically important lava field created by the Lakagígar eruption. Around Kirkjubæjarklaustur, travellers see broad expanses of old lava covered by fragile moss. The moss is easily damaged, so visitors should stay on roads, paths and established stopping areas rather than walking across it.
