Folklore
Story & Folklore
East Iceland is the only place in Iceland where reindeer roam wild. Introduced from Norway in the 18th century, the herd now numbers about 7,000 animals and roams freely across the highlands east of Egilsstaðir. In winter, the herds descend from the highlands toward the coast in search of grazing. The best viewing spots are along Route 1 between Egilsstaðir and Djúpivogur, and on the mountain heathland above Seyðisfjörður. A regulated winter hunt keeps the population stable.
