Dynkur's history is deeply intertwined with the Icelandic landscape and its people. The waterfall, a prominent feature of the Þjórsá river, Iceland's longest river, has been a significant landmark for centuries. Its name, 'Dynkur,' meaning 'The Roar,' is a testament to the powerful sound it generates, a sound that would have guided travelers and herders across the vast, uninhabited plains. Local communities have long recognized and named this natural wonder. While those from the Gnúpverjaafrétt area refer to it as Dynkur, the residents of Holt have traditionally called it Búðarhálsfoss. This highlights the localized knowledge and connection people had with their immediate environment before more standardized mapping and naming conventions. In more recent times, efforts have been made to enhance visitor access and safety. Recognizing the waterfall's unique beauty, a marked hiking trail was established from the western side (Gnúpverjaafrétt) in the summer of 2015. This development aimed to provide a safer and more rewarding experience, guiding visitors to the most impressive viewpoints while also cautioning them about the sensitive and dangerous nature of the cliff edges. Further trails have also been marked, connecting Dynkur to other nearby natural attractions along the Þjórsá river, encouraging deeper exploration of this remote and stunning region.

Dynkur is a series of powerful cascades in the Þjórsá river, dropping roughly 38 metres through a rocky gorge. The waterfall is remote and is reached by highland routes and walking access, so road and weather conditions should be checked before travel. Visitors should stay well back from the river and cliff edges.
