Dælarétt

Dælarétt is a small but distinctive cultural landmark in the rural landscape of Flóahreppur. The old sheep pen was built from stones gathered from Þjórsárhraun, the immense lava field that underlies much of this part of South Iceland. For generations, communal sheep pens were essential pieces of farming infrastructure, used when animals were gathered from summer grazing and sorted back to their owners. Dælarétt is regarded locally as exceptionally old and is traditionally described as the oldest sheep pen in Iceland. The stone enclosure has now been preserved, allowing visitors to see a practical piece of rural history in its original landscape rather than inside a museum. The site also illustrates how geology has shaped everyday life: the same ancient lava that provided building material forms the surrounding ground. Nearby earthquake fissures add another geological layer but also create a hazard. Visitors should remain on stable ground, avoid the cracks and respect the agricultural setting. Dælarétt works well as a short stop when exploring Flóahreppur, Urriðafoss and the Þjórsá lowlands.
