The original Auðunarstofa was built at Hólar in the early 14th century and is associated with Bishop Auðunn rauði Þorbergsson. It remained part of the bishop's complex for centuries before being dismantled in 1810. The present reconstruction was completed in 2002.

Auðunarstofa, also known historically as Timburstofan, stands at Hólar in Hjaltadalur and represents an important chapter in the architecture of Iceland's medieval bishop's seat. The original timber building was constructed in the early 14th century during the episcopacy of Auðunn rauði Þorbergsson. The medieval structure stood at Hólar for around five centuries before it was dismantled in 1810. A reconstruction was completed in 2002, using traditional ideas and craftsmanship to recreate the character of the earlier building. Auðunarstofa is best understood in the context of Hólar as a whole. The site was one of Iceland's principal ecclesiastical and educational centres for centuries, and the cathedral, archaeological remains and reconstructed historic structures together help visitors understand how important Hólar once was. Rather than functioning as a standalone attraction, Auðunarstofa adds architectural depth to a wider visit to the historic settlement.
