Arnarker is part of the Leitarhraun volcanic landscape in Ölfus. The cave preserves lava-flow textures created as molten basalt moved beneath a solidifying crust.
Arnarker formed when the surface of a lava flow solidified while molten lava continued moving beneath it and later drained away. A metal spiral staircase provides access through an opening in the cave roof. Visitors should not treat the staircase as evidence that the cave is a fully developed attraction: underground conditions can be dark, wet, icy or unstable, and appropriate lighting, footwear and cave experience are important.
