Arnarfjörður has supported farming, fishing and small coastal communities for centuries. Its branching fjords and steep terrain shaped where people settled and how they travelled between farms and villages. Today, the same geography remains central to the experience of driving through the southern Westfjords.

Arnarfjörður is one of the largest and most dramatic fjords in the Westfjords, cut deep into a landscape of steep mountains, narrow valleys and quiet coastal settlements. The fjord branches into several smaller inlets, creating a varied shoreline and a road journey with frequent changes in perspective. Dynjandi, the region's best-known waterfall, lies at the head of one of the inner fjords and is a natural anchor for any visit to the area. The fjord is also closely tied to the communities of the southern Westfjords. Bíldudalur sits on its shore, while nearby valleys and smaller fjords contain traces of farming, fishing and long-established local routes. The scenery is the main reason to slow down here: calm water can mirror the mountains, while wind, cloud and low-angle light can make the same view feel completely different within minutes. Arnarfjörður is best experienced as part of a wider road trip rather than as a single viewpoint. Allow extra time for photo stops, short walks and changing road conditions. The distances around the fjord are longer than they can appear on a map, but the journey rewards travellers with some of the most characteristic scenery in the Westfjords.
