About Aldeyjarfoss
Aldeyjarfoss is a dramatic 20-meter waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót river, surrounded by perfectly symmetrical hexagonal basalt columns rising like cathedral pillars around the cascade.
Marvel at nature's sculpted art with basalt columns and powerful water.
Background
History & Background
Aldeyjarfoss is located in the northern interior near the start of the Sprengisandur highland route and is one of Iceland's most undervisited waterfalls despite its extraordinary beauty. The basalt columns surrounding the falls are among the most symmetrical in Iceland. The falls are accessible by a gravel road in summer and see a fraction of the visitors that the more famous waterfalls on the Ring Road receive.
Aldeyjarfoss is one of the most interesting natural attractions in north-iceland of Iceland.
Folklore
Story & Folklore
Aldeyjarfoss is Iceland's hidden masterpiece — a waterfall so visually perfect it looks like concept art for another planet. The falls drop 20 metres into a circular bowl of basalt columns — the columnar jointing here is among the finest in Iceland, stacked in impossibly neat hexagonal pillars like a petrified pipe organ. The contrast between the white crashing water and the geometric black basalt is absolute. The waterfall is in the northern Highlands, accessible via Route F26 (Sprengisandur), which requires a 4×4 vehicle in summer. The effort involved means Aldeyjarfoss is visited by a fraction of those who see Skógafoss or Gullfoss — which makes it all the more extraordinary for those who do.
Local Legend
The Hidden Folk of Aldeyjarfoss
Local folklore tells of hidden people (huldufólk) who live in the cliffs surrounding Aldeyjarfoss. According to legend, these elves protect the waterfall and its surroundings. Travelers who show respect to nature may catch glimpses of mysterious lights near the falls at dusk, believed to be the hidden folk tending to their homes in the rocks.
