The Akureyri Botanical Garden's origins trace back to 1912, initially established by the Akureyri Women's Association as a park for the public. Its primary purpose was to enhance the town's beauty and provide a recreational space. However, its scope quickly expanded beyond a simple park. By 1957, the garden had evolved into a full-fledged botanical garden, taking on a significant role in scientific research, particularly in cultivating and studying plants at high latitudes. This transformation underscored its importance not just locally, but internationally, as one of the world's northernmost botanical gardens.
