Swimming Pools in Iceland

The sundlaug is the heart of Icelandic community life—where locals gather to swim, soak, and socialize. Discover the best public pools across Iceland.

The Icelandic Sundlaug Culture

Icelandic swimming pools (sundlaugar) are much more than exercise facilities. They are social hubs where Icelanders of all ages meet to chat, relax in the hot tubs, and enjoy the benefits of geothermal water. Every town has at least one public pool, and they are open year-round.

The swimming pool is Iceland living room. It is where toddlers learn to swim, teenagers hang out, adults discuss the day news, and seniors maintain their health. The geothermal hot tubs (heitir pottar) are the main social zone—expect to join conversations with friendly locals. This is authentic Icelandic culture at its most accessible.

Unlike typical swimming pools, Icelandic sundlaugar are powered by geothermal energy, making them sustainable and affordable to operate year-round. The water is naturally heated from the earth, often reaching the pools at 80-90°C before being cooled to comfortable temperatures. Most facilities include multiple hot tubs at varying temperatures, a main swimming pool (often heated to 28-29°C), and additional features like waterslides, lazy rivers, and children areas.

How to Visit an Icelandic Swimming Pool

  • Shower thoroughly without a swimsuit before entering the pool area (required by law and enforced)
  • Bring your own towel and swimsuit, or rent them at the facility
  • Most pools cost around 1,000-1,500 ISK ($7-11 USD)
  • Hot tubs range from 38-44°C (100-111°F)—start cooler and work your way up
  • Locals use hot tubs for socializing—this is where conversations happen
  • Many pools have saunas, steam rooms, and cold plunge pools
