歴史
Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool stands as a remarkable monument to Icelandic ingenuity and community spirit. Its origins date back to 1923, when it was constructed by local residents of the Seljavellir area, making it one of the oldest man-made swimming pools in all of Iceland. The primary purpose of its construction was to provide a place for children and adults alike to learn how to swim, a vital skill in a country surrounded by the sea and dotted with rivers. The pool's design is simple yet effective, a 25-meter concrete structure ingeniously built into the side of the mountain, utilizing natural hot springs to feed its waters. For many years, Seljavallalaug served as a beloved community asset, a place of gathering and recreation. However, over time, as newer, more modern facilities emerged, and perhaps due to its remote location, the pool gradually fell into disuse. Nature began to reclaim the structure, and it risked being lost to history. Fortunately, the strong connection locals felt to this historic site led to its restoration. Volunteers undertook the arduous task of clearing volcanic ash (notably after the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, which buried it) and debris, repairing the pool, and ensuring its continued existence. Today, Seljavallalaug is a protected outdoor swimming pool, maintained by local efforts, preserving its legacy as a free, historic, and naturally warmed oasis in the heart of South Iceland.
