Set into dark volcanic rock on the Strandir coast, beside the tiny farm of Reykjanes and the Gjögur airstrip, Hákarlavogur is a small hot pot dammed with concrete against the natural stone — warm water cupped at the edge of the Atlantic, with room for roughly six to ten bathers. Photos of it circulate widely for its stark, cinematic beauty: black rock, grey sea, and a pocket of steaming water in between. That visibility has come at a cost. Hákarlavogur sits on private land, and the family who owns it has publicly asked that people not bathe there without permission, after unauthorized visits and social-media attention brought unwanted foot traffic to their property. It remains a genuinely striking spot — but one to admire respectfully rather than assume open access to.
