The mountains rise above the spectacular Borgarfjörður Eystri fjord, home to one of Iceland's best puffin colonies at the headland of Hafnarhólmi. The hiking in the Dyrfjöll area, particularly the route up the ridge to the 'door' and along to Hvítserkur viewpoint, ranks among East Iceland's finest.
