About
Systravatn is a small freshwater lake located on Systravatn hill, directly above the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in South Iceland. The lake sits at an elevation of approximately 100–120 metres above sea level and offers one of the best viewpoints in the area. The trail to the lake starts from the centre of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and climbs steadily through grass and heather-covered slopes. The hike is moderate and takes 20–30 minutes to reach the summit. A walking path continues around the lake itself. From the hilltop, 360-degree panoramic views extend in all directions: - South to the Atlantic Ocean and black sand coastline - West across the Skaftá river valley - North to the highlands and glaciers - East along Route 1 and the Eldhraun lava field The lake is relatively shallow and surrounded by low vegetation. It is a peaceful spot for a picnic or a break from driving. The contrast between the tranquil lake and the vast, dramatic landscapes radiating outward is striking. Systravatn is named after the nuns (systrar) of the medieval convent that gave Kirkjubæjarklaustur ('Church Farm Cloister') its name. Local folklore associates the lake with the punishment of nuns who broke their vows.
📖 Story
Systravatn means 'Sisters' Lake,' named after the Catholic nuns (systrar) who established a convent in Kirkjubæjarklaustur before the Reformation. According to one dark legend, two nuns who broke their vows were drowned in this lake as punishment. Whether true or folklore, the name has endured for centuries. Today the lake sits peacefully atop a hill overlooking the village, reached by a short walking trail that rewards visitors with sweeping views across the lava fields, valleys and coastline of the South Iceland lowlands.
