About

Reykjanes Peninsula was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015 in recognition of its exceptional geological significance. The peninsula is located in southwest Iceland between Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport. Geological features: - **Mid-Atlantic Ridge on land**: Visible rift valley and tectonic plate boundary - **Active volcanism**: Fagradalsfjall eruptions (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) - **Geothermal areas**: Seltún, Gunnuhver, Krýsuvík hot springs - **Lava fields**: Recent and ancient flows covering the landscape - **Coastal cliffs**: Bird nesting sites and wave-cut formations - **Volcanic craters**: Accessible crater rows and cinder cones Key sites within the Geopark: - **Fagradalsfjall**: New volcanic eruptions visible from hiking trails - **Blue Lagoon**: Famous geothermal spa fed by power plant runoff - **Bridge Between Continents**: Footbridge spanning North American and Eurasian plates - **Reykjanesviti**: Iceland's oldest lighthouse - **Seltún**: Boiling mudpots and fumaroles - **Kleifarvatn**: Deep lake that shrinks and grows with earthquakes The Geopark offers hiking trails, geothermal bathing, birdwatching, and geology education. Visitor centers in Reykjanesbær and Grindavík provide information and exhibits. Reykjanes is easily accessible from Reykjavík Airport and many sites are reachable via day trips. The peninsula sees active volcanic monitoring and occasional eruptions create temporary exclusion zones.

📖 Story

Reykjanes is where Iceland is being created — literally. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs across this peninsula, pulling apart at 2 cm per year and creating new land through volcanic eruptions. Since March 2021, a new volcanic system has awakened with multiple eruptions near Fagradalsfjall and Grindavík, drawing millions of visitors to see fresh lava flows. The peninsula has geothermal power plants, bubbling mudpots, cliff-nesting seabirds, and lunar-like lava fields. It's Iceland's geology textbook made real.
