Seltjarnarnes es un municipio separado de Reykjavík (población ~4500) pero físicamente parte de la península que forma el área de la ciudad capital. Es el municipio más occidental de Islandia. The main attractions are the coastal walking path around the peninsula, the Grótta tidal island and lighthouse, the local swimming pool (Seltjarnarneslaug — one of the best-sited in Iceland, with views over the bay), and birdwatching on the rocky shore and tidal flats. El sendero costero que rodea Seltjarnarnes tiene unos 5 km de longitud y se tarda entre 1 y 1,5 horas en recorrerlo a un ritmo cómodo. El camino está asfaltado en la mayor parte de su recorrido. 📖 Historia de Seltjarnarnes – La península tranquila al borde de Reykjavík
Seltjarnarnes fue una de las primeras zonas pobladas de la región de Reykjavík, con evidencia de granjas de la época vikinga. El faro de Grótta se construyó por primera vez en 1897 y desde entonces ha guiado a los barcos hasta el puerto de Reikiavik. El área permaneció rural y escasamente poblada hasta que la expansión suburbana de Reykjavík en el siglo XX se extendió a la península.
