La Casa Nórdica se creó tras un acuerdo entre los países nórdicos para construir un centro cultural conjunto en Reykjavík. El encargo recayó en Alvar Aalto, cuyo diseño combinó los valores culturales nórdicos con las últimas ideas en arquitectura modernista humanista. Alvar Aalto came from a country as cold and dark as Iceland, with a landscape of forests and lakes instead of lava and geysers. But he understood immediately what kind of light the building needed.

La Casa Nórdica se creó en 1968 tras un acuerdo de 1957 entre Dinamarca, Finlandia, Islandia, Noruega y Suecia para financiar un centro cultural conjunto en Reikiavik. El arquitecto finlandés Alvar Aalto fue seleccionado para el encargo en 1962. Aalto murió en 1976, pero el edificio sigue funcionando como uno de los principales lugares para el intercambio cultural nórdico en Islandia.

Alvar Aalto designed the Nordic House at the age of 64, still near the peak of his powers. He visited Reykjavík to study the light and landscape before finalising the design — the undulating roof is said to reference the Icelandic mountain silhouette.

The Blue Tile Basement
The lower level café with Aalto's signature blue tiles and curved bar is the most atmospheric room in the building — and relatively few visitors find their way down to it.
The Outdoor Amphitheatre
The outdoor seating terrace and amphitheatre on the south side of the building is used for summer concerts — one of the most atmospheric outdoor venues in Reykjavík.
